Jumping Off The Map

Our voyage has come to an end and started a new beginning in the USA. We want to thank all of the people we met on the road who open their hearts and their doors to us and helped us during the trip. It’s thanks to these people and many more that we could do what we did. There were so many unforgettable moments.

It was a tough decision, but with our last few days of our world tour remaining we decided to skip past Quito and stay in Otavalo instead. Otavalo is about an hour north of Quito and accessable to the airport. The main attraction is the wonderful central market place, where dozens of artisans show their works.

We spend 3 days exploring the market to see the unique collection of materials on display and to do some last minute gift shopping for our families back home. Everything was negotiable. Much of the items at the market were also sold on other stands close by, so negotiating was key to finding the best bargain. And prices varied wildly from stand to stand for nearly identical items. So a lot of patience was required as not to be taken for a ride.

We narrowed our search down to a few items that caught our eye. One of them was a type of art from the region that carves beautiful village motifs into dried gourds. Another favorite style Ecuador was the small oil paintings on sheep skins that depicted country life of the peasants on the rolling hills in the shadows of large volcanos. These pieces were truly beautiful and captured the spirit and beautify of the culture very well. We bought a few nice pieces of these to take home to our family and even a few more for our own collection.

Apart from shopping, we spent a nice long day hiking in the surrounding mountains to saw a beautiful mountain lake. The 5-hour hike around the lake was a great way to wrap up our last hiking trip in South America. The owner of the Hostal Rincon Del Viajero was able to drive us out of town to the start of the hike around the lake and pick us up at the end. We saw many new plant and bird species that we had not seen in other parts of our tour. A few types of humming birds could be seen around the lake, but were extremely difficult to photograph with our compact camera.

At the end of the hike we came across a llama farm and were able to get up close to them and get them to eat our of our hands. This was a big thrill for us because the llamas we saw on our other hikes were always too shy to get close to us. Now we had them eating out of our hands and could interact with these animals who stole our hearts during our trip.

The last episode of the one-year adventure turned out to be a mini adventure in itself. We took an airport shuttle service from Otavalo to the airport. It turns out that the shuttle is a hatch-back car that you share with 5 passengers and their luggage. We squeezed in for the hour ride to the airport and the extreme driving began. It’s important to know that in this part of Ecuador there are no sophisticated highways. That didn’t stop our driver from pushing his taxi to 130km/h on several stretches of road where he had no business taking such risks. I spoke up and asked him to take it a bit easier, not wanting to get into an accident on the last day of our trip. He tried denying that he was speeding, even though my seat was just behind his shoulder and in full view of the speedometer. So, as revenge for asking him to drive safely, he dropped us off at the airport and asked for an extra 5 dollar charge for our « over-wieght luggage ». We stood on the airport sidewalk for a few minutes disputing this charge and finally had enough and walked straight into the airport without paying a cent more than we owed.

Our flight to Miami was scheduled for 6:00 am and the checkin started at 4:00, so we decided it was better to spend the night sleeping at the airport than to take our chances in a Quito hotel. We got our sleeping bags out and slept on the benches in the lobby. The excitement about ending our world tour and returning home the the USA was enough to keep me awake all night to watch over our belongings. The next thing I knew, we were checking into th eflight and going home!

Situee a la croisee des chemins et ceci deja bien avant les Incas, Otavalo, petite ville de 30000 habitants, est bien connue dans toute l’Amerique du Sud pour le fabuleux marche qu’elle accueille tous les samedis depuis des generations. Le marche a lieu un peu tous les jours, le plus important etant le samedi qui voit deferler des centaines de touristes. Afin d’esquiver un peu la foule, nous arrivons samedi soir et decidons de rester jusqu’a la fin de notre sejour en faisant l’impasse sur Quito.

Puisqu’il ne nous reste plus que quelques jours avant la fin de notre grand voyage, on va faire un tour a la Plaza de Ponchos afin de rapporter un petit quelques chose a nos famille et amis qui nous attendent a la maison. Et on a pas ete decus. Il y a de tout et a tous les prix (tout depend de votre habilete a negocier). Bien entendu, on trouve un grand nombre de pieces d’artisanat « Made in China » (pas la peine de soutenir le contraire, on a bien repere les boites d’emballage sous les traiteaux) mais heureusement, il reste beaucoup d’articles faits main par des artistes locaux: tentures en laine, bijoux en graines en provenance de l’Amazone, peintures, broderie, lama en peluche en… poils de llama,
et bien entendu, le textile. Les origines du délicat et minutieux travail de tisserand des Otavaleños remontent a l’epoque du peuple Cara. Avant d’être colonisés par les Incas, les Caras s’étaient établis à Otavalo ainsi que dans les petits villages des environs, où ils confectionnaient des vêtements qu’ils échangeaient aux peuplades de l’Oriente (partie jungle) et de la Costa (bord de mer).
On a craque sur des peintures a l’huile representant des scenes de vie rurale, des fiestas et bien sur des llamas et alpacas. On a aussi bien sur rapporte du chocolat et du cafe qui ont un gout tres particulier car ils poussent a proximite des bananiers qui leurs donnent une touche d’acidite remarquable.

Maintenant qu’on s’est occupes de la partie shopping, prets pour une derniere rando? Allez, direction la Laguna de Cuicocha, qui rappelle un peu celle de Quilotoa, une lagune nichee dans le cratere effondre d’un volcan et qui abrite quelques iles en son milieu.

On fait le tour en quelques heures et c’est une rando tres agreable au cours de laquelle on est attentif aux fleurs et aux nombreux colibris un peu farouches.

 

 

A la fin de la marche, on tombe sur une ferme en construction qui heberge quelques llamas. Joe essaye une fois de plus de les appater avec de longues herbes… et ca marche, comme quoi il ne faut jamais desesperer. Nous passerons encore un bon moment en leur compagnie dont on ne se lasse pas. Nos derniers llamas avant un bon bout de temps.
Et le lendemain arrive. C’est le jour du grand depart. Comme notre avion ne decole pas avant 6 heures du mat le surlendemain et que nous ne souhaitons pas aller a Quito juste pour quelques heures de sommeil, on decide de passer la nuit a l’aeroport. Allez, on ressort les sacs de couchage.

Les formalites accomplies, nous embarquons, laissant derriere nous 1 an de voyage. Pincement au coeur d’abandoner tant de libertes, melange a la curiosite et a l’excitation de demarrer une nouvelle vie aux Etats-Unis.

Encore un peu deconcertes, on embarque pour Philly et quand finalement l’avion se pose, c’est les yeux tout embues de larmes que nous applaudissons a l’atterrissage.
